Sony PSP-3000

It is now official, folks! Sony just announced its PSP-3000, offering a couple of revisions over the PSP-2000. Does it come with a better joystick? Nope. How about a built-in SSD? You can forget about that, along with dreams of a hard drive. The only two changes are a built-in microphone and an LCD panel that is touted to work “better outside with no glare”. Well, will we see the Phoenix Wright series being ported over to the PSP since you can now shout “Objection!” into the microphone? I don’t think so, but this indicates that voice-based communications will play a role in the PSP-3000 in due time. No idea on pricing, but will you make an upgrade to this model if you already own a PSP?

The Newest Fun Gadget

What have we got to say about one of the newest fun gadgets in town, the Apple iPhone 3G? We enumerate the pros and cons…

In terms of physical appearance, the new iPhone 3G is nearly identical to its first model. Significantly, the biggest change in its look is found at the bottom part, which is now completely covered in high-grade, scratch resistant plastic, as opposed to the 2G’s aluminum and plastic combination. This is actually an improvement, as it contributes to a better GPS reception, which, incidentally, is what the 3G is all about. This smartphone’s GPS functionality is not problematic, compared to other fun gadgets where you’d have to struggle with getting a signal. Reception for the 3G is expectedly much clearer. Before its release the iPhone 3G was promised to have improved sound quality and it does deliver. Only slightly taller and thicker than the 2G, the back side of the 3G is slightly curved, too. This makes handling of it a little easier.

The screen of the 3G is a bit warmer, almost yellowish, than its predecessor. And it isn’t exactly a plus factor for someone with a less-improved vision. The interface loading time is noticeably slower compared to the 2G, especially when browsing the contact apps. Although both these observations are nothing that firmware upgrade should fix.

The usual features are, of course, still there and very much handy, user-friendly and stylish. Gaming capabilities mimic a Wii-like control and some of its choiced applications are pretty cool. The iPhone 3G is both and MP3 and MP4 player with a 2mp camera that most users would love having. Its supreme web browsing function and compatibility with third-party software makes it one of the ultimate must-have fun gadgets for 2008.

Now for the critical part — the battery life. Unfortunately, the iPhone 3G isn’t quite a fun gadget when it comes to this aspect. While twiddling with the 3G over the weekend, it unbelievably only lasted a little over four hours after continuous talking, texting, web surfing, a little internet surfing and one movie. Using the 3G under normal circumstances should ease battery life to about six, eight hours or so, but one can’t help but pay close attention to it all the time. Hopefully, the phone doesn’t die while outdoors and without the convenience of a dock charger. Because it’s still a new release, Apple should have something in store to correct this inconvenience soon.

Oh Spam!

Teradon Industries, which adds scare quotes around “smart solutions” in its own motto, would very much like you to consider buying an institution-class intercommunications system.

Its system allows school staff to set bells from the computer station, play a school song, control the building’s announcement system, and summon pteranodons.

Set your bells with tones from a computer. Have your School Song for the bell to begin the school day. Change your schedule from your computer. Time is corrected automatically from the Internet. You never have to change time on the bell system again. Intercom system programming can be monitored remotely. Make room calls and announcements from your telephone or master handset. Schools can now manage and control their intercom system. No more costly service bills and waiting for service.

Call for human rights at Beijing Olympics

Prague, 31 July 2008 – A group of international intellectual, spiritual and political leaders has published a public appeal today, calling on the International Olympic Committee to allow full access to information at Beijing Olympics and on Olympic athletes to express themselves in support of people whose rights are being violated by the Chinese government. The signatories, including writer and former Czech president Václav Havel, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng, European Parliament Vice-President Edward McMillan-Scott, and philosopher André Glucksmann, reject the notion that peaceful promotion of human rights would constitute political propaganda prohibited by the Olympic Charter.

Pointing to the fact that human rights are a “universal and inalienable topic, enshrined in international human rights”, they argue: “To speak of human rights is not politics; only authoritarian and totalitarian regimes try to make it so. To speak of human rights is a duty.”

The signatories call on the IOC to allow Olympic athletes to be able to “learn about the real situation in China and to point out human rights violations freely whenever and wherever in line with their conscience”. They also call on all Olympians “to use this liberty to support those whose freedoms, even at the time of the Olympics, are denied by the Chinese government”.

The appeal comes as Olympic Watch, a Prague-based human rights organization whose chairman Jan Ruml is among the signatories, is addressing national Olympic teams, recommending to each a particular Chinese prisoner of conscience to adopt and take action in their support. Details of this campaign will be released on Friday.

Pinays of Payatas | Proud Workers Behind Rag2Riches Success

Several years ago, I was one of those many people who went to Payatas to help when the awful Payatas “garbage-slide” tragedy happened, we consoled the survivors as they try to understand why their love ones had to perish in that heartrending disaster that saw hundreds of women, men and children buried alive under a mountain of trash.

That is why I can’t help but feel happy, when I heard the news concerning the success of the Rags2Riches who was able to win in the US Enterprise Award, and learned that the Women of Payatas where the people behind the production.

Their story is really inspiring, they would collect scrap cloth from the garbage dump in payatas, weave them into rugs, before they would sell it to some unscrupulous middlemen who would earn at least P25 while these women would just earn P1 per rug. Thanks to some good hearted businessmen who formed the Rag2Riches who helped them to sell their products into a much better market like bazaar and malls, they where able to earn better income. And when Rajo Laurel joined the team, it became more exciting because theirs rugs were transformed into bag, purse and even wine holders.

From their meagre income of P10 a day, their income soared to at least P1,000 a week. Such an encouraging story of Pinay Achievements. It is just our wish that their business would continue to flourish.

Aim High Pinay of Payatas!
