Around the World with Math and Science Night: A Collaborative STEAM Event at Klager Elementary School.

Exploring the Globe through Math and Science Night

On April 26, 2024, the Klager Elementary School hosted a collaborative event called Around the World with Math and Science Night. Melissa Yekulis, a teacher at the school, was responsible for submitting content about the event to the school’s website. Sara Swanson added the content to the site on April 29.

The event took place in Klager’s cafeteria and exposed families to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) learning opportunities. Children had the chance to learn about various topics from around the world during the night. For instance, they discovered how science is used to grow food in Arctic regions and learned about popcorn’s discovery in Peru. They also got a glimpse into China’s invention of sorbet through technology showcases by Klager K-12 robotics teams.

Aside from STEM activities, there was also an art show preview and a make-and-take activity where children created notebooks that were first invented in Australia. Families tested their math skills by learning about Spain’s invention of lollipops and competing in a challenging math game called Mancala created in Africa.

Title 1 was present at the event to educate families on reading around Michigan through children’s books written by Michigan authors and Michigan products. MI Future Funds provided information on college planning and saving as well. At the end of the night, families voted for their favorite station with Robotics Teams winning it all! The event was interactive and engaging for people of all ages involved.

Overall, this memorable experience gave children an opportunity to explore various subjects from different parts of the world while providing families with valuable insights into STEAM education and college planning strategies.
