Cal Bears Enjoy Success in Golf, Water Polo, and Beach Volleyball: The Trifecta of Pac-12 Athletic Achievements

Men’s team finishes second in Pac-12 golf, women’s team comes second in water polo as well

The Cal Bears had a busy weekend with notable achievements in different competitions. The men’s golf team finished second at the Pac-12 championships, held at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Arizona. Ethan Fang tied for third place, Sampson Zheng finished sixth, and Eric Lee placed 13th in the individual competition. This was the best finish for Cal since 2016 and they trailed eventual champion Arizona State by just three strokes in the final round.

The women’s water polo team also had a successful run at the MPSF championships, securing the runner-up spot after making it to the championship game for the first time since 2011. Despite a 13-10 loss to undefeated No. 1 UCLA, players like Rozanne Voorvelt and Mary Dempsey showcased impressive performances. Dempsey scored her 100th career goal during the tournament and will now host the NCAA Championships at Spieker Aquatics Complex from May 10-12 with the field set to be unveiled during a selection program on Monday.

In another accomplishment for Cal sports, the beach volleyball team secured a berth in the NCAA championships for the third consecutive year. The Bears, with a program-best No. 7 seed, will face off against No. 10 Long Beach State in the first round of the tournament at Gulf Shores, Alabama. This matchup is a rematch of last season’s first-round encounter where Cal emerged victorious with a 3-2 win. Six Pac-12 teams have qualified for the NCAA field, with top-seeded USC aiming for their fourth consecutive national championship
