Exploring the Moon: China’s Comprehensive Geologic Atlas Reveals Intriguing Insights into the Lunar Surface

China publishes the most comprehensive map of the moon to date in new video

In recent years, China has released a comprehensive geologic atlas of the moon, which is available in both Chinese and English. This detailed map showcases various intriguing geological features such as impact craters, with each ring structure on the map representing an impact event. Smaller rings are referred to as impact craters, while larger ones are called impact basins.

Liu Jianzhong, a senior researcher at the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGCCAS), explained the significance of the different colored age groups on the map. Purple indicates the oldest impact craters, while other colors represent more recent events. The atlas was the result of collaborative work by Chinese scientists and cartographers that began in 2012.

Over time, China has carried out numerous lunar missions, including orbiters like Chang’e 1 and Chang’e 2, which aimed to map the lunar surface. Subsequent missions like Chang’e 3, Chang’e 4, and Chang’e 5 have placed landers, rovers, and collected samples from both sides of the moon. The upcoming Chang’e 6 lunar far side sample return mission is set to launch soon.

This geologic atlas is considered a valuable resource by Ouyang Ziyuan, a renowned Chinese lunar scientist. It provides insights into the moon’s history, resource distribution, and potential for future exploration. China’s ambitious plans include building an International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) on the moon in the 2030s and sending astronauts to the moon before that decade ends.

The release of this detailed geologic atlas marks another significant step forward in China’s ongoing efforts to explore and understand our neighboring celestial body. With its advanced technology and scientific expertise, China continues to push boundaries in space exploration and contribute to our understanding of the universe around us.
