Local Health Center Receives $5.2 Million Grant to Expand Services and Improve Access to Care in Southwest Georgia

Albany Area Primary Health Care awarded $5.2M grant

Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. announced on Monday that Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc. has been awarded a $5,187,269 Health Center Program grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This grant will help ensure that residents in Southwest Georgia have access to timely and affordable healthcare services.

Albany Area Primary Health Care is recognized as one of the largest Community Health Centers in Georgia and Southwest Georgia. HHS-funded health centers like this one are vital in offering affordable, accessible, and high-quality primary healthcare services to individuals and families regardless of their financial status.

Shelley Spires, the Chief Executive Officer of Albany Area Primary Health Care, explained that this grant will enable the organization to expand its services, open new offices, and recruit additional healthcare providers in Southwest Georgia. The goal is to ensure that patients across 13 counties in the region receive the care they need.

Rural, smaller, and underserved communities often struggle to maintain local healthcare facilities, making grants like these essential for providing quality healthcare to all individuals. Congressman Bishop emphasized the importance of having health centers in close proximity to where people live so they can receive necessary care and adhere to treatment plans.
