New Breakthrough in EU-Israel Relations: Expanding Sanctions Against Iran’s Drones and Missiles

EU commitment to impose sanctions against Iran welcomed by Israel

The European Union (EU) has announced plans to expand existing sanctions against Iran following a recent attack with drones and missiles. Israel has expressed gratitude for the EU’s commitment to imposing these sanctions, which followed an Israeli bombing of the Iranian Consulate in Damascus in April. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz praised the EU’s decision, calling it an unprecedented achievement for both parties.

On behalf of the EU, High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell confirmed plans to expand existing sanctions against Iran’s drone sector. The EU is seeking to increase sanctions targeting shipments of Iranian missiles and drones to regions where they could be used by militant groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon or the Houthis in Yemen. The EU has also identified Iraq and Syria as locations where Iranian weapons may be deployed.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz took to social media to express optimism regarding the EU’s decision to impose sanctions on Iran. Katz described the decision as a significant achievement and praised the EU’s intention to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
