Protecting Your Family from Tornadoes: The Rise of Storm Shelters in Texas Homes

Business is picking up for tornado shelters in Texas, vendors report

Tornadoes have been making their presence known in the Houston area recently, with two hitting the region in the past month. One of these tornadoes occurred in Katy earlier this month, while another struck Trinity County on Sunday night. As storm attorney Rene Sigman notes, tornado damage is on the rise in every state, including Texas.

To help families prepare for severe weather events and protect themselves from tornadoes and heavy wind storms, businesses like Lone Star Safe Rooms are offering a variety of options to make homes safer. These safe rooms come in different sizes and can be customized to fit the needs of individual families.

Jeff Kiser of Sportsman Steel has also noticed an increase in demand for tornado shelters following major storms. He showed KPRC 2 Investigates one of their shelters that is designed to protect families from high-impact wind events. Chris Hooser believes that tornado shelters will become more common in homes in the future, similar to how dishwashers are now a standard feature in households.

While storm shelters are typically built into the ground in the Midwest due to the risk of flooding, going underground is not an option for southeast Texas homes. Frank Billingsley of KPRC 2 reports on this increasing need for tornado shelters and reminds families that it’s important to have a plan in place to keep everyone safe during severe weather events.
