Virginia Scholar Award for Dr. Terence Hicks: Renowned Expert in Social Science Discipline

Professor from East Tennessee State University Receives Award for Social Science Scholarship

Dr. Terence Hicks, an award-winning scholar in the social science discipline, was honored with the Virginia Social Science Association Scholar Award. He expressed his gratitude during the association’s 97th annual conference on April 20.

Hicks is a tenured full professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at East Tennessee State University and has also served as a dean for the Clemmer College of Education and Human Development. With over 10 published books and 100 combined research publications and presentations, he is a renowned expert in his field.

Hicks specializes in research on first-generation college students, college student self-efficacy, STEM education, college retention, school closing and massive resistance, high school to college transition, spirituality among college students, and psychological well-being of students and administrators in higher education. His academic papers have been presented both nationally and internationally on these topics.

Apart from his teaching and research roles, Hicks has also served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Southern Regional Education Board and as a Research Fellow for the National Institutes of Health, National Center of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Hicks holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Virginia State University, a master’s degree in counseling education from North Carolina State University, a Doctorate in Education degree from Wilmington University Delaware, and a Ph.D. in counseling and counselor education from North Carolina State University.
